Barking Job Shop

The Job Shops are a FREE confidential information, advice and guidance service designed to assist local residents with getting back into employment or securing more sustainable employment within the shortest possible time.

This service is available to anyone:

  • Over 16
  • Living in Barking and Dagenham
  • Not in full time education
  • If you have a visa you must have Recourse to Public Funds
  • You must not be registered on the Work Programme (unless living in Council accommodation or applying for council vacancies or with the construction team)

The Job Shops recognise that there are many reasons why people find themselves out of work and understand that clients may need help to identify the best possible way to access employment.

We can provide support on a range of services including:

  • Help to find you the job you want
  • Provide careers advice on a one to one basis
  • Assist you in creating or updating an existing CV
  • Support you with completing job applications
  • Provide access to computers for job searching
  • Develop and enhance your interview skills and techniques
  • Provide better off calculations and in work benefit advice
  • Identify training needs and signpost to relevant provision
  • Stationary and postage for job applicationsFREE computer and internet access for jobFREE telephone, photocopying and scanning facilities for job searching
  • Access to Young London Working vacancies
  • Dedicated apprenticeship team to offer advice and support to securing apprenticeships
  • Dedicated construction team to offer support to those looking for construction work and training
  • Dedicated employer engager liaising with local employers to fill their vacancies
  • Dedicated advisor to help clients to apply for council vacancies with personal statement support

Citizens Advice Bureau

Barking & Dagenham Citizens Advice Bureau provides:

  • Information and advice on welfare benefits, housing, debt and money, employment, discrimination, family, consumer, tax, immigration and more
  • Information and advice on welfare benefits and debt for people experiencing mental ill health.
  • Hate crime advice, advocacy support to victims of hate crime incidents
  • Outreach Income raising clinics at 8 Childrens Centres.

All residents of Barking & Dagenham who are over 16 are eligible.

DABD – Welfare Benefits Advice

DABD’s comprehensive Advice & Support including welfare benefits service. We seek to help people understand their benefit entitlements and ensure that the money coming in to their households is maximised.

We offer free, confidential advice in the following areas:

  • DABDLOGOIncome maximisation – looking at your financial situation including all income and out-goings
  •  Benefits checks – are you claiming what you are entitled to?
  •  Advocacy – helping you have your voice heard and your views considered, this could be by writing letters or making phone calls on your behalf
  •  Help with filling in forms
  • Better-off’ calculations – looking at the benefits of moving into work
  • Help with letter writing and advocacy
  • Support and advice on challenging decisions with regards to your benefits

Criteria to register

The criteria to be eligible to register with the Job Shop are as follows:

  • You must be a Barking and Dagenham resident
  • You are not working more than 16 hours per week
  • You must not be a full-time student

The Independent Living Agency (ILA) aims to maximise the potential of individual disabled adults so that they can live their own lives.

They provide payroll support for people who are accessing care privately.  They also can provide equipment & living aids, cleaning service, transport and advocacy regarding housing & care. More on their website

LBBD – One Stop Shop

The One Stop Shop offers help, advice and information on a range of services through the Council and its partners. Our experienced staff are able to deal with your enquiries quickly and efficiently in modern, comfortable surroundings. It is our aim that all your needs — from education to freedom passes — can be met in just one visit. The One Stop Shop is situated at Dagenham Library and provides the following services:

  • Council tax enquiries
  • Housing advice
  • Housing rents
  • Freedom passes
  • Parking permits
  • Bill payment (via Scancoin machine)
  • General advice
  • Recycling and rubbish collection
  • Education advice and school applications
  • Free school meals and uniform grants
  • Estate management for Council tenants

The One Stop Shop also provide self-service computers and free-to-use telephones for customers.
